Are you achieving all of your goals? Are you even setting goals? Are you stuck in a rut? Do you know what a rut is? It is a grave with the ends kicked out. Its time to start setting bigger goals, stretch goals. Will you do that?

Stretch Goal Reached

Same Old Same Old

I’ve been heard to say that a day without learning is a day wasted. I feel good when I can say I achieved all of my goals. . . but how long does that feeling last if my goals are only routines? Oh yippee! I made my goal to wake up today, gee, I hope I can achieve that goal again tomorrow. That gets kind of old doesn’t it.

Staying the same is boring. Oops, I said it. Yes, the word I hate to hear from my kids, “Boring”. . . “I’m bored”. But it is the truth. Doing what you’ve always done will get you what you’ve always got. If you’re here, you’re interested in changing something. You have a plan or idea rolling around in the rock on top of your shoulders.

When we look back at the W.A.Y. S.M.A.R.T. Goals, the second “A” stood for “Achievable or Attainable”  and the “R” for “Relevant and Realistic”. The old acronym I used had a “C” in it which stood for challenging. Losing the “C” we have to include the challenge in relevancy. Easily achieved goals leave us with no victory, no celebration, just a “duh, I did that.”

I used to hold a poor mindset for progress and goal setting. I felt that if I missed a goal I was “bad”. With that mindset, I set small easily achievable goals. They were easy to reach but that stunted my growth. It has taken me years to adjust that mindset. Now I look at failure and success as both good, both opportunities for learning and growth. I used to be so afraid of missing a goal that I didn’t do anything amazing.

My Stretch Goals

I just set a stretch goal this week to get 16 new people in my mastermind groups: 8 for Debt Freedom and 8 for Championship and to help 4 people in my individual championship program during my next 12 Week Year starting Monday, October 31, 2016. (That is a great book I read this month. Here’s my affiliate link if you’re interested: The 12 Week Year: Get More Done in 12 Weeks than Others Do in 12 Months) When I first contemplated the goals. I was thinking one or two in each would be ok but what would happen in my mind when I achieved that two people goal. I would quit, or at the very least let up. So I asked myself, “Self, what would look like really good growth for your company in the next 12 weeks?” That is how I came up with those numbers.

Are they a stretch? Yeah, I’ll have to work hard and put in some effort. Will my effort let up after I get two sales, two new participants I’m helping grow in personalized programs? NO, the goal is 8 and 8 and 4. Will I relax when I get 8 and 8 and 4? NO, that is a stretch goal for me. If I reach that, I’ll be so pumped up that my efforts have paid off. I’ll set even bigger goals in the future like we discussed previously on goalmentum. Once we get rolling, it is only science to keep on going.

BUT!

Yeah, I knew you were going to throw in a “but”. BUT, What if you don’t reach 8 and 8 and 4? What then? Aren’t you a miserable failure? NO! Maybe I only reached zero but I found a bunch of ideas that don’t work to grow this business at a phenomenal rate.

“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
–Thomas A. Edison

Maybe I reached something between two and my stretch goal. That is where the cream is. That is the fruit of stretch goals. A stretch goal pushes us to greater achievement than we thought possible. I achieve more that the two I first considered when setting the goal for two may have stopped the progress right there. The stretch goal set the stage for achieving more than I was comfortable with.

Stretch goals reached and exceeded is the old “shoot for the moon and if you miss you’ll be among the stars.” outcome. Stretch goals stretch us and grow us. Be content no longer take the bull by the horns and change your life. Add your stretch goals in the comments below “W” from the W.A.Y. S.M.A.R.T. Goals and we’ll stretch together.
