Top o’ the Mornin’ to Ya!

TLDR: Discover the transformative power of beginning each day with intentional silence as part of the Morning SAVERS routine. Learn how this biblical principle of “be still and know that I am God” creates the foundation for disciplined Kingdom leadership, moving from reactive living to proactive spiritual formation through structured morning practices.

What?

One of my colleagues asked me, “You keep posting about that quiet time, that moment of silence, that stop striving or be still and know that I am God and all those bits and pieces.”

I figured that’s just one part of it. It’s the part I was really missing the most in my morning and daily routine – that silence. And it came out of just trying to follow good biblical Christian principles. But it also came out of “The Miracle Morning” by Hal Elrod.

Hal’s got a set of things in there called the Morning SAVERS. And that’s really helped me find a disciplined way. We talked about motivation versus discipline recently, and this is about a set of SAVERS to increase discipline every day.

SAVERS: S-A-V-E-R-S. Silence, affirmations, visualization, exercise, reading and scribing or writing, journaling. We’re going to start a series on that right now, talking about the Morning SAVERS and what each one means to me.

I like the way Hal puts it in his book because he’s like, “You can have them be this long or you can have them be this long.” So if you’re in a rush, you can have your Morning SAVERS be one minute each and they take you six minutes. If you’re doing better on time, you can have each one take 10 minutes and you got 60 minutes. I typically have them mixed around my exercises anywhere from 20 minutes to an hour or maybe two hours if I’m going on a nice big bike ride or something.

Today is silence. Be still and know that I am God. Take time each day to find the silence, the beauty, the wilderness.

Why?

This experience revealed something crucial about Kingdom leadership: the part I was missing most in my morning routine was that intentional silence. Just trying to follow good biblical Christian principles led me to discover how silence creates the foundation for everything else in my day.

I like to do it outside in the sunlight. In the winter, that’s a little harder and I don’t want to go outside in Minnesota. But just being still and listening – part of my meditation is praying that God guard my mind and guard my thoughts as I enter my Morning SAVERS, that he allows only him and I to come together in that silence and I don’t get ideas and distractions from other people and other folks.

The silence isn’t just about eliminating noise – it’s about creating space for God to speak and for my mind to be properly oriented before the day begins. This connects to our earlier discussions about God guarding our hearts and minds.

Lesson

Silence is crazy. It’s just being able to still my mind. Not just the noise silence, but the silence in that meditation. This is about meditating better – not in a Western Eastern sense, but in a healthy mental state, Christian sense.

My silence, I mix it up. I start with silence to get everything cool, calm, and cleared out. And then prayer. So I start from that still small voice kind of presence and listen in prayer. Prayer used to be all talk and now it’s some listening. I’m trying to make it even more and more listening.

The Morning SAVERS provide a disciplined framework that can be adapted to any schedule. Whether you have 6 minutes or 60 minutes, the key is consistency and intentionality. These principles can be applied to living our disciplined lives as Kingdom Family Leaders.

Even though Hal Elrod isn’t strongly Christian in his book, the principles align beautifully with biblical practices and can be transformed into powerful spiritual disciplines that serve our calling as Kingdom leaders.

Apply

Over the next few days, we will go over all the SAVERS to give you kind of an eagle eye view of what the Morning SAVERS are. Maybe you want to grab the book, “The Miracle Morning” from Hal Elrod and check it out and read it from his perspective.

Start with just one minute of silence tomorrow morning. Find a quiet place where you can be still and ask God to guard your mind and thoughts. Practice moving from external noise silence to internal heart and mind silence.

Write down in the Doobly Doo: What’s your biggest challenge with finding silence in your morning routine? What one step could you take this week to create more intentional quiet time with God at the start of your day?

Consider how silence at the beginning of your day might change your leadership, decision-making, and presence with your family throughout the rest of the day.

You be blessed!
