Top o’ the Mornin’ to Ya!
TLDR: As Christian men leading families and businesses, we often face the challenge of discerning between God’s direction and mere distractions. Without proper guidance, we can waste precious time and resources on the wrong path. This message explores how to build a personal “board of directors” through mastermind groups to help navigate these critical decisions.
What?
I’m currently exploring a significant seasonal business and investment opportunity that has me excited. Rather than tackling this decision alone, I’m following the “Who Not How” principles and bringing it to my mastermind group for their collective wisdom. Today, I’ll be taking the “deep seat” in our meeting to present my opportunity and receive their guidance on whether this is truly a direction I should pursue or merely a distraction.
Why?
Unlike corporate leaders who have formal boards of directors and leadership teams, fathers, small business owners and solo entrepreneurs often lack structured guidance systems. This isolation can lead to poor decision-making, especially for visionary leaders who may get caught up in exciting possibilities without properly evaluating their alignment with long-term goals. The consequences of misidentifying a distraction as a direction can be devastating for our families, businesses, and communities.
Lesson
Discernment requires community. Even with the best intentions, we need others who know us, our families, our finances, and our circumstances to help us evaluate opportunities properly. A mastermind group functions as a “board of directors for life,” providing the external perspective needed to distinguish between God’s direction and worldly distractions. The preparation process—sharing information in advance, fielding understanding questions, and allowing time for thoughtful consideration—creates the space for true discernment rather than hasty decisions.

Consider a current opportunity or decision you’re facing. Are you treating it as a personal choice, or have you invited trusted advisors into the process? What would change if you had a personal “board of directors” helping you discern whether this is truly a direction God is leading you toward or merely a distraction from your true calling? Take time to identify where you need this kind of discernment in your life right now.
You be blessed.
